Macaw Wallpaper V&A and 1838 Collaboration
Bursting with colour and character, Macaw is a joyful, vibrant pattern featuring parrots perched within lush jungle foliage. Expertly surface printed to replicate the artisanal look of the original woodblock-printed wallpaper, this design is a faithful tribute to a V&A archive treasure. The deep teal colourway reflects the tones of the 1908 original—still remarkably relevant for today’s interiors.
Available in four expressive colourways: Teal, Olive, Blush, and Vivid Yellow.
Archive Inspiration:
Originally designed by Walter Crane (1845–1915) for Jeffrey & Co., Macaw made its debut at the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition in London, where it received a prestigious Grand Prix. While best known as the most influential children’s book illustrator of his generation, Crane was also a visionary wallpaper designer. His apprenticeship as a wood-engraver gave him deep exposure to the fine detail of contemporaries like Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Sir John Tenniel, and his own designs reflect a striking blend of stylised nature and decorative flair. A committed Socialist and follower of William Morris, Crane believed fervently in the power of art to enrich everyday life across all walks of society—a vision that lives on through this timeless pattern.
