Floribunda Wallpaper V&A AND 1838 Collaboration
A fabulous floral extravaganza, Floribunda brings the beauty of the past vividly into the present. Adapted from a Victorian furnishing fabric in the V&A archive, this wide-width wallpaper retains the generous scale of the original pattern. Blooming boughs of lilac and roses trail gracefully across a crisp white background, evoking the charm of an English garden in full bloom.
Available in four timeless colourways: Lavender, Blush, Teal, and Midnight.
Archive Inspiration:
The original pattern—produced in Lancashire around 1850—was once part of the V&A’s inaugural exhibition, False Principles of Design (1852), held at Marlborough House. Curated by the museum’s first director, Sir Henry Cole, the exhibition aimed to educate the public on good versus bad design. Ironically, Floribunda’s exuberant floral was publicly critiqued at the time for its “direct imitation of nature,” with lilac and rose branches said to awkwardly follow the curves of furniture. Despite these criticisms, the pattern has endured—its beauty and decorative charm now celebrated as a classic example of Victorian design.
