Disorder in Stasis / Passerine | Joel Weaver

Originally created as part of a conceptual exhibition at Newcastle’s 36 Lime Street Gallery, Disorder in Stasis delves into the essence of artistic process and the unintentional beauty found within its by-products. Using the humblest of tools—ordinary black biros—artist Joel Weaver examines repetition, rhythm, and the tension between control and chance.

“I began with a metre ruler and drew line after line across the canvas,” says Weaver, a former studio assistant to Damien Hirst, Ryan Gander, and Carlos Rolon. “Each time the pen reached the edge, I wiped the excess ink onto a separate sheet beside me.”

While the exhibition centred around Feldspar, the main piece, it was the ‘by-product’ work—Passerine—that captured critical attention. Born of blotting paper and stray ink, Passerine conveys both precision and spontaneity. The linear structure suggests order, but the subtle, shifting pen marks evoke starling murmurations—dynamic, cloud-like movements that introduce a lyrical freedom.

Weaver’s background in fine art and drawing informs his process-driven practice. A graduate of Leeds College of Art and the University of Northumbria, he later completed a drawing fellowship where he received the Mike Holland Memorial Drawing Prize. In 2024, he was nominated for the Kleinwort Hambros Emerging Artist Prize, marking him as a distinctive voice in contemporary conceptual art.
